Hypnosis creates a bridge between the cerebral cortex (conscious mind) and the deeper brain, or “subconscious” structures (brainstem, diencephalon, limbic system). This bridging effect makes it possible for an individual to learn to take conscious control of unconscious processes. In this way hypnosis makes it possible for the foundations of emotional frameworks to be changed. Through skilfully-taught hypnotherapy, trauma can be released, problematic emotional beliefs can be eliminated, and illnesses caused by stress, emotional pain or learned helplessness can be resolved.
Hypnosis is a skill set that is acquired and improves with practice. Hypnosis is not a “procedure” that is done to someone. In fact, brain-imaging and brain-wave research show that the brain functions in hypnosis exactly as it does in states of deep meditation, deep relaxation, in highly-focused and creative states, and in absorbed states (such as reading a book or watching a movie or television with such attentiveness that other happenings in the room go unnoticed.)
All of these activities tend to slow the brain down to an alpha or theta wave state, and tend to increase activity in brain structures (such as the gyrus and cingulate region) which relay messages between the cerebral cortex and the deep brain.
